Haworthia standeri

Haworthia standeri, Die Poort

Haworthia standeri, J. M. Esterhuizen

standeri: after Okkie Stander

H. standeri is small, light green species, which forms dense clusters in habitat. Rosette size is 3-4 cm, leaves are short and without teeths on margins. J. M. Esterhuizen, who described this plant in 2000 (Haworthiad Vol. 14 Issue 1 January 2000) refers correctly to its rather neutral characteristics. It resembles reddii, cymbiformis or turgida. All of these species grow far away from standeri. Bayer include this element under H. mucronata var. rycroftiana, which is much larger, with more robust and longer leaves and is less proliferous. It flowers in February and March, same as for example H. zantneriana. Because of the not clear connection to any species it make sence for me to keep it separed.

Distribution map
H. standeri grows Sout of Gamka Poort, usually high on slopes, where it is quite difficult to reach. At Die Poort they co-occur with H. blackburniae, H. arachnoidea and G.aff. brachyphylla. It is not very often cultivated plant, but if it has enough light, it can form nice compact clusters. Propagation is easy by offsetts.
